Crazy things about my grandma
1) she's 92
2) she has a black pot-bellied cast iron woodstove in the kitchen that she uses to heat the house and cook stuff
3) she has two fridges; one really old one that still works, and one newer one that is broken and she uses as a filing cabinet.
4) there is no shower in the house, only a bathtub.
5) no new objects have been added to the kitchen walls (something of a giant bulletin board) since 1991.
6) she never buys anything- any objects that come into the house were brought there by other people.
7) she also produces no trash- burnable stuff is burned, plastic is washed and reused, and metal is eventually taken away by my uncle.
8) she rode a Razor scooter two years ago, but she doesn't believe she'll live to be 100.
9) she is famous for her flower garden and gets in the paper all the time for it.
10) we gave her a cordless phone on this visit. Previously, she had been paying $2.05 every month (!!!) to the phone company to rent her phone. Apparently, before phones were deregulated (in the 60's I think) you had to rent a phone from the phone company, you couldn't buy your own. So her rotary dial phone cost her over $240, all told. The new phone cost $18.
