damn electronic photos
How big should photos be? Mine are always huge and unwieldy, but I don't know how small I should make them. Plus, my camera is only 3.1 megapixels and the new ones are 5 or 6. What does that MEAN?

Megapixels describe the maximum resolution of the image. For example, early cameras all took photos at 640x480 pixels for a standard size picture, which is 307,200 pixels, thus about .3 megapixels.
3.1 megapixel probably means about 2304x1728 pixels at max quality, which for a 4x6" image, means 384 pixels per inch (dpi). Printers now-a-days print at (at least) 1200dpi. So yeah, you could do better.
When you're posting on the web, the fastest way to decrease image size is to change the resolution (the ratio of pixels to inches) to 72 in photoshop. This'll reduce the number of pixels and thus the quality of the image, but monitors display at 72 dpi, so you're only losing quality that people can't see.
You could also set your camera to take lower quality pictures, if the amount of disk space is your only concern.
Otherwise, to keep those nice high-res pictures you may want to print out some day, invest in a CD burner or an external firewire hard disk.
